Conversion Techniques

There are several conversion techniques that we adapt or build new “tooling” in order to meet the specific needs and requirements for a project. As tooling techniques can vary in sophistication, these conversion techniques need not stand alone and hybrid solutions may offer the least resistance.

The objective of a conversion strategy is to arrive at the collection of frame types, or “models”, and construct tooling to automate the media and logic extraction into the destination Flash® technology.

In addition to the approaches listed below, the spectrum of conversion options can be extrapolated to consider how our capabilities would excel when comparing our proposal to other vendors contemplating a manual reconstruction.











We have had success using several which include:

• “In Authorware®” code which can be pasted in as a map and has the ability to systematically walk the frames and perform extraction tasks


• Windows messaging which can walk the authoring flow line and invoke mouse clicks and keystrokes in a robot like manner as well as perform the mouse or keystrokes needed to put the data into alternate software


• Windows API hooks which can drill into object handles of a running application and grab assets


• Proprietary methods that enable automation of locating models and identifying exceptions utilizing flow line logic extraction for courseware conversion


• Advanced Authorware® versions enabling in-tool export of media assets

The diagram above shows the process, workflow, and tools used in the Allen Interactions Courseware Conversion Process. An Automated Asset and Logic Extraction Tool is created unique to the logic and structure of each clients courseware. This tool is then used to externalize all the media and content, as well as create externalized course structure maps that are translated to match the Flash Objects that replicate the courseware’s navigation and interactivity. This entire process is managed via the use of an Intranet-based Workflow Automation Tool.
